My weekly selection #4

A summary of the interesting things recently encountered by Twisty.

AMERICAN GODS

Let me start from saying I have not read the book. I did watch the trailer a while back and it did not encourage me to watch it at all. It seemed extremely pretentious. And you know what, maybe it is. There have only been two episodes out so far, so what do we know? But since the book is said to be really good, I decided to give the story the benefit of the doubt.

The recurring problem I have with series like that is the violence. I really really appreciate a suggestion. My imagination works very well, I don’t need to be shown exactly what human body consists of on the inside. But at the same time, it is art and Quentin Tarantino said once:

“If a guy gets shot in the stomach and he’s bleeding like a stuck pig then that’s what I want to see - not a man with a stomach ache and a little red dot on his belly.”

But if you’re anything like me, you want to watch it with your eyes partially covered and with someone next to you who will tell you what you’ve missed and when you’re allowed to look again.

ANATHEMA

I don’t know what to say. Nice build-up and I love Lee, of course, but it’s a little empty for me. I hope the rest is better.

ASGEIR

Afterglow is finally out!

And again, we have family cooperation here - Asgeir’s father and brother wrote the lyrics. Did you know that he comes from a village inhabited by forty people only? :D npr.org says: “There’s a tight-knit intimacy and soulfulness to the album that feels familiar and warm, even as the music itself carries a glacial chill”. Love it.

BETTER CALL SAUL

This one is a spinoff from Breaking Bad. If you’ve seen Breaking Bad, you might be interested in giving this one a try too. If you haven’t, you can still do it, it has a great story of its own. However, it is not as dynamic as Breaking Bad was. Which is not a bad thing, it’s just different.

What I love about Better Call Saul, apart from its story and the cast, is the smell of the desert, the heat of Albuquerque and the general vibe of New Mexico.

I am talking about Better Call Saul, because it’s back with a new season.

DIANA KRALL

Brand new release - the classics of jazz. Diana Krall at her best.

GORILLAZ

Very American album, very political album. I have not yet made up my mind about this one, but it is fresh from the Gorillaz camp so it has to be shared.

HOUSE OF CARDS

May is a feast month! Season 5 starts very soon and this is what they have in store for us:

The story is kind of based on the British mini series, which was based on a book written by Michael Dobbs (who also happened to be an advisor to Margaret Thatcher for two years). Political fiction at its best.

And, of course, the soundtrack.

KENDRICK LAMAR

What can I still say about Kendrick? It’s his 4th album and it’s amazing. I can listen to it over and over again. He is definitely evolving. Rolling Stone says it’s “a brilliant combination of the timeless and the modern, the old school and the next-level”. I could not agree more.

KROKI

This group formed in Poland in 2015. Currently still working on new material. It is a combination of electro, jazz, soul, indie rock. I am completely hooked and waiting for more.

LITTLE DRAGON

Little Dragon are a Swedish electronic group. I and my listeners first fell in love with their sound when they released this one:

Now they are back with new material.

MODERAT

I’ve had Moderat shuffle on repeat for a few weeks now. I’ve shared Finder and Eating Hooks on my shows before - both of them come from the last album. If you don’t know yet that Moderat brings eargasm, then you will after checking out the following:

THE GOO GOO DOLLS

Everybody knows Iris, but who remembers the Black Balloon?

For me, their music has a lot of sentimental value. When I discovered them, there was no Internet. I went to Vienna and spent my last money on all their records, that were not available in my local music stores. And I actually prefer the sound they carried before the whole Iris era.

Here we are 19 years later and they’re back with an EP - You Should Be Happy.

TWIN PEAKS

The new is coming.

David Lynch <3 David Lynch <3 David Lynch <3 David Lynch <3 I am sorry, I cannot help it. He has never disappointed me and I have high hopes for this one, too.

Many of you are probably too young to remember the original series. It aired in the 90s. And even though I cannot say it has been the best production ever made, it is definitely my number 1 series. Twin Peaks is where I go to when life gets tough. Twin Peaks is what I watch when I am ill in bed. Twin Peaks is my ultimate asylum. I love every sycamore tree in Twin Peaks. So this is it, the new season is coming and I am absolutely ecstatic!!!!

In the original series we have an FBI agent coming to town, to solve a murder mystery. But Twin Peaks is so much more. It’s a bunch of crazy characters, wonderful music by Angelo Badalamenti and the most captivating vibe ever.

Thank you! Yes, I still watch it like that.

Nice read! With the description of American Gods, it reminded me of how you're a fan of Game of Thrones, but never watch the bloody scenes. You missed the Red Wedding, oh my! And yes! All those Quentin Tarantino films...
