Rock of the Year: 2016 Recap

As a tradition, at the end of December each year we do Rock of the Year edition of the show. Recap inside!

We had a look at the songs that were released throughout the year 2016. We also mentioned some more significant events that took place this year. See recap below.

    • Singer David Bowie passed away at the age of 69.
    • Actor Alan Rickman passed away at the age of 69.
  • In music:
    • Megadeth released an album "Dystopia". We played the title track from this album.
    • Dream Theater released an album "The Astonishing".
February
  • In real life:
    • Leonardo DiCaprio finally won the Academy Award (Oscar) for his role in "The Revenant".
    • Actor Harper Lee passed away at the age of 89.
  • In music:
    • Lacey Sturm released an album "Life Screams".
    • Wolfmother released an album "Victorious". We played the title track from this album.
    • Magnum released an album "Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies".
March
  • In real life:
    • Bill Gates is once again in the Forbes' list of billionaires at position #1, having $75 billion.
  • In music:
    • 3 Doors Down released an album "Us and the Night". We played a song called "Still Alive".
    • Iggy Pop released an album "Post Pop Depression".
    • Amon Amarth released an album "Jomsviking".

  • In real life:
    • British director Guy Hamilton (known for a James Bond film "Goldfinger") died at the age of 93.
    • Singer Prince passed away at the age of 57.
  • In music:
    • Blue October released an album "Home". We played a song called "Houston Heights".
May
  • In real life:
    • In India, a 70-year-old lady gave successful birth to a baby boy.
    • EgyptAir flight MS804 went missing over the Mediterranean on route Paris to Cairo.
  • In music:
    • 61st Eurovision Song Contest was held. Ukraine won it with the song "1944".
    • Radiohead released an album "A Moon Shaped Pool".
    • Sick Puppies re;eased an album "Fury". We played a song called "Stick to Your Guns".
    • Other artists that released albums include Lacuna Coil, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton.
June
  • In real life:
    • Professional legendary boxer Muhammad Ali died at the age of 74.
    • Actor Anton Yelchin (known for his role in Star Trek) died in an accident at the age of 27. Curiously, he's the latest addition to the "27 club".
    • United Kingdom voted to leave the EU in their "Brexit" referendum. David Cameron resigned as a PM.
  • In music:
    • Volbeat released an album "Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie". We played a song called "The Devil's Bleeding Crown".
    • Band of Horses released an album "Why Are You OK".
    • Rage released an album "The Devil Strikes Again".
    • Red Hot Chili Peppers released an album "The Getaway".
    • Thousand Foot Krutch released an album "Exhale".
July
  • In real life:
    • South African athlete Oscar Pistorius is sentenced to 6 years in jail for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
    • Pokémon Go, the real-world mobile game by Niantic, is first released.
    • Attempted military coup in Turkey failed. Nearly 300 people got killed, 6000 were then arrested.
  • In music:
    • Blink-182 released an album "California". We played a song called "She's Out of Her Mind".
    • Good Charlotte released an album "Youth Authority".
    • Steven Tyler released a Country-genre solo album "We're All Somebody from Somewhere".
    • Billy Talent released an album "Afraid of Heights".

    • 31st Summer Olympics were held in Brazil.
    • American swimmer Michael Phelps won his 23rd Olympic gold medal. Crazy!

    • Hurican Matthew killed over 1000 people in Haiti. Many injured across the United States.
  • In music:
    • A Day to Remember released an album "Bad Vibrations".
    • Meat Loaf released an album "Braver Than We Are".
    • Of Mice & Men released an album "Cold World".
    • Poets of the Fall released an album "Clearview".
    • Airbourne released an album "Breakin' Outta Hell". We played a song called "Rivalry".
October
  • In real life:
    • American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • In music:
    • Alter Bridge released an album "The Last Hero".
    • Green Day released an album "Revolution Radio".
    • OneRepublic released an album "Oh My My".
    • Placebo released two albums: "Life's What You Make It" and "A Place for Us to Dream".
    • Kings of Leon released an album "Walls".
    • Korn released an album "The Serenity of Suffering".

November
  • In real life:
    • Republican Donald Trump was elected President of The United States of America, defeating democrat Hillary Clinton despite Clinton winning 2.9 million more votes.
    • Plane carrying Brazilian Chapecoense fooball team crashed near Medellin, Colombia killing 71 players and journalists.
    • UNESCO added Belgian beer to its Cultural Heritage List.
    • Singer Leonard Cohen passed away at the age of 82.
    • Long-time Cuba leader Fidel Castro died at the age of 90. A bit of black humor.
  • In music:
    • Bon Jovi released an album "This House Is Not for Sale".
    • HammerFall released an album "Built to Last". We played a song called "Hammer High".
    • David Bowie's album "Bowie Legacy" was released.
    • In Flames released an album "Battles".
    • Metallica released an album "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct".
December
  • In real life:
    • British actor Peter Vaughan (recently known from Game of Thrones) passed away at the age of 93.
    • Singer George Michael died from suspected heart failure at the age of 53.
    • American actress Carrie Fisher passed away at the age of 60.
  • In music:
    • The Rolling Stones released an album "Blue & Lonesome".
    • Nine Inch Nails released an album "Battles".
    • Metallica released an album "Not the Actual Events".

In general it was a long and pretty painful year in the real world. A lot of big names passed away but most sad is that over 21,000 people were killed in the never-ending terror attacks. According to this source, there are multiple attacks every day taking place somewhere around the world.

This year there were a total of 42 editions of Rock Explorer. We'll be back with our regular show already next Wednesday in year 2017. Thanks for listening and keep on rocking! Happy New Year!
